Art/Therapy

Mandalas are important to a variety of cultures, faiths and schools of thought...I hope you enjoy coloring one (or two) for your journal...

You can create some interesting mandalas at this site.  If you click on the asterisks, there is more information about the different elements.

Leave a brief but thoughtful COMMENT (150-200 words or so) on this post answering one or more of these questions:
  • How or why do you think art could be used as therapy?
  • Can you think of other pieces of or types of art that are connected to certain faiths, disciplines or movements?
  • What role does art play in your own life?
  • If you could be any kind of artist, what would you be?  Why?

  1. The role art plays in my life is an interesting one, I suppose. I use it as a means of expression. Mostly, an expression of my emotions and fantasies. In a way, art and writing and music makes my fantasies feel real even if they aren't or can't be. Art is a way to live out my desires and to make me feel a certain way. I like creating atmospheres and so I choose art and music based on how I want to feel.

If I could be any sort of artist, I have a few answers I could go with. In fine arts particularly, I would love to be a master of chalk pastels. I love how forgiving and soft they are. Watercolor also seems fun to do, too. I suppose I already am a sort of artist, I enjoy designing. If the definition of art is broader, I would like to be a music artist.

  2. If I could be any kind of artist, I'd like to be a musician. I like making beats on my computer and singing, and I feel like I best express myself through music. But I am also very interested in visual art. One of my favorite things to do is make art while listening to an artist's music, and vice versa. I also enjoy making music while looking at certain art to inspire me.

  3. What role does art play in your own life?
Personally, I see art in every aspect. Humans, music, literal art on a canvas, writing. It is all perceived as different and abstract to me. Something so simple to someone else can be seen as complicated and abstract to me. Humans are the most drastic aspect of art. The differences in hair color, hair texture, hair length. Every part of a human is unique and various. Also, I appreciate the way music can capture and portray human emotion. The beat or even the lyrics of the song can move someone and allow them to reminisce. I believe that not any two humans think the same although they may have similar beliefs. Everyone's thoughts are cluttered in their mind and everyone has a different way of coping with it or projecting those thoughts. I believe writing is the most valuable and serene way of dealing with negative thoughts or just keeping your mind on track, another person may like to keep their thoughts close rather than exposing them on a piece of paper. I think writing down personal goals whether that be for your future or to help you figure out the direction you are heading. It clears your mind space and redirects your focus.

  4. If I could be any artist I would be an abstract painter. My mom is an artist and she has always been a big inspiration to me, although our preferences in art are quite different. She draws and paints things to look almost eerily real, while my favorite art style's sole purpose is to make images that are so entirely ludicrous that there's no way that it could be based off of an image in real life. Abstract art speaks to me in a way that no other form of art ever really has, I'm not entirely sure why, but I love it a lot. Abstract art doesn't have to just take the form of paint on a canvas...it can also be paint splatters on a pair of old jeans. My mom and I make "art" out of things that could be unexpected or weird to anyone else, for example, we like to wear some of our art on our clothes by painting things on usually jeans. Granted it can look a little out of the ordinary but I really enjoy showcasing a small piece of artwork in my everyday life.

  5. Art is therapy. I mean everything we draw, create,or make we put a part of our self's into it. So if you feel a piece has a certain emotion or feeling its perhaps because it was what they were feeling,or at least trying to convey. But its damn near impossible to create something unbiasedly or with out personal intervention or opinion. Its the subconscious nature of humans to relate to things and or make the world around us more comfortable for us. Comfort and relation are based on the individual, meaning the individual effects the change on a personal and biased level. In this applying to art it means we are as much a part of the art as it is a part of us,meaning there is no escape from showing who you are. (At least in my opinion)

  6. If I could ve any kind of artist, I would want to be a comic creator! I love writing and drawing (though I'm not great at it,) and comics would combine them into something I would enjoy so much!
I've always been interested in art, and my grandma taught me how to paint before she passsed away. I'd like to believe my love of art is genetic from her. Art is a beautiful form of expression, even if you don't think you can draw that well.

  7. What role does art play in your own life? Art plays a significant role in my life, Its a foundation of my career interest. I love drawing and writing and painting and do all regularly when available. I hope to be a professional song writer or musician. Art is apart of my everyday life and it influences most of my decisions in the way of the world. Every action is simplified by art.

  8. If I could be of any artist I would want to be a photographer. For me I think that taking pictures is very important because it captures moments that you can relive and I think that looking at an image reminds you of a moment and makes it very clear. I think that the smallest moments that we really dont think matter are very important and I think that those need to be captured.

  9. Why do you think Adult Coloring Books are so popular right now?
I think that adult coloring books are becoming popular because it is a way for adults to unleash their inner child and calm down. The world continues to grow hectic and crazy, and it only accelerates in business. With technology and social media, it can be harder to get a break. With the rise of awareness in mental health and stuff like that, people are finding more ways to calm down and ease feelings of anxiety. Adult coloring books are an easy and fun way to do this. Me, personally, I just like looking at the pictures because coloring outside the lines stresses me out, but it is something really cool to look at. Coloring books can ease stress and give people the opportunity to express themselves. It also gives artists the chance to improve their coloring skills and put their personal twist on coloring sheets.

  10. How or why do you think art could be used as therapy? I think art could be used as therapy to get your mind off whatever you might be in therapy for. Also I think it might help calm your thoughts and maybe capture what youre feeling in a way with art. Art can relax people by maybe drawing something repetitive to keep you calm and keep your mind distracted from what youre thinking about and focused on the art. What role does art play in your life? Art has an impact on my life because I love going to art shows and seeing all the different types of painting or sculptures and learning about what they mean. I think its so cool when you can see a story from a piece of art. Art shows are very calming and are very educational to me. Ive got to see all kinds of art in New York City and all the historical art and landmarks which gave me so much inspiration.

  11. How or why do you think art could be used as therapy?
I dont know the legitness of this but I have read and seen things on older people getting therapy buy a younger adult and they have been shown pictures by the therapist trying to trigger memories, hoping the images show symbolism or try to trigger memories in the older people. If you could be any kind of artist, what would you be? Why? I would definatly be a grapgic designer, becasue I have a littlee xpirence and a litte expirence in logos, pages, websites, and I feel like I could start my own brand one day.

  12. What role does art play in your own life? Art plays a big role in my life. With music mostly because it's all around us , it can make us feel a certain way , picture something in the past or future. People are able just to connect with someone through music. Creating music is one of the things i'll want to successfully try in my life , the chance to make a positive impact in a persons life through a beat.

  13. What role does art play in your own life?
I used to paint all the time when I was in elementary school. I got a box of paints, colored pencils, brushes, and crayons for either christmas or my birthday one year and just started and didn't stop. Many of these were paintings of my dog, some were of the squirrels or bunnies outside, but once I began to get older, I started to paint trees and flowers. I took a landscape painting class in 7th grade with some friends and really started to enjoy painting nature. At this time, I lived in a really small town with a lot of forests that I could paint, and it helped me get closer to both nature and my friends who were in the class with me. I stopped painting for a while after I left middle school, but started again over the summer of 2019. It was always really nice to forget about everything going on in my life and just paint and talk. So I did exactly that. I called a friend and we talked while I worked on my painting (it was of those tik tok clouds but they were in space bc I was taking astronomy online at the time for a science credit, turning my stress over the class into something positive). There was even a time when I went live on instagram while painting it. And it's almost finished but not yet because school started again and I suddenly lost all of my free time.
Painting isn't the only kind of art that has influenced my life, though. I've been involved in music since before I can remember. I've been in more choirs and musicals than I can count, and have been taught a lot about music theory at home. It was also a way that I connected with a lot of friends that I'm still in contact with today. At elementary school parties, we would all sing along to all of the songs we heard on the radio day after day. I had a friend who sang with me at the talent show every year. We don't even live in the same state now, but we still talk a lot more than my friends who I never got to sing with. There was also a time in middle school when I would go to a friend's house every day and we would hang out, but the specific memories I have of this were when she would play the piano and we would both sing and harmonize to whatever pop songs we could think of.
All of my longest lasting friendships are related to art.
