Thank you for taking the time to consider author Maya Angelou's ideas about how dreams play into the writing process. Please do a New Post on your blog with your answers to 4-6 of the questions on the handout I gave you. Your post should be a decent length (500 words) if you've provided thoughtful answers. Title the post Writers Dreaming. Also include an image (of Maya, of something connected to dreaming or an aspect of one of your answers) on this post.
If you're interested in learning more about Maya Angelou, her interesting life and her beloved works, you can start at her official website. I bought this t-shirt showcasing her autobiography (one of my favorite books) I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings from a little store downtown next to Maria's called 5# Apparel. Most of the proceeds the store nets are donated to charities around the world. You can also find the t-shirt and others featuring classic, challenged books (ones that have been put on banned books lists at one time or another) at Out of Print. Click the "Shop" link to get to the t-shirts--the site donates a book to Books for Africa for every purchase made. I'd like to do some thinking next week about books that have made a difference to us as people and as writers, and I wonder if you've read any of the classics featured on their other shirts...

I love that several of you have mentioned you "dream" of becoming professional writers. Leave a comment here telling us why you'd like/not like to be a professional writer and/or what kind of writing you see yourself doing.
Stephenie Meyer said on Oprah that she always heard that was an unrealistic, financially hopeless goal, but I hope that no matter what anyone says, if that's your dream, you go for it. Seems like you'd regret not trying more than you'd regret taking a shot at it...
Also, remember to turn in your Writer's Journal today with at least 25 full pages for our Mid-1st Quarter check. Wow, time flies...
I think if I were to genuinely become a writer instead of just working on small projects I think I would become either a fiction writer or a gonzo journalist
ReplyDeleteI would like to be a fiction author but I have problems bring together all of my ideas
ReplyDeleteI definitely see myself as becoming a professional writer. I like to illustrate scenarios and emotions throughout my writing, and my writing would be inspired by personal experiences.
ReplyDeleteI don't really think that I want to have writing as a job because most of my works are often confusing out of context because all of them reference all of the other ones or things from my childhood or even things that happen in my daily life. I write for specific people, or to a specific group of people, or even just for myself; I don't feel a general public would appreciate my writing style.
ReplyDeleteI definitely see myself continuing writing in the future, just not as a career.
DeleteI would love to be a professional writer and I would want to do two things. One is to be a journalist writing pieces on those affected by certain issues like the foster care system, mental health in east Asia, prison reform, drugs, child marriage in america, disabled rights. And I want to write an advice book/ memoir about being LGBT and growing up in a conservative environment surrounded by bigotry. I just want my words to be able to help people and give a voice to those who can't speak or aren't understood. I see myself becoming the person in peoples lives that I didn't have when I was in their situation and want to inspire others to do the same.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to be a fiction writer, and currently it is a dream job of mine. I love thinking about what ifs that wouldn't be likely to happen in the real world, like how would people react if pigs could fly or if someone from the 1800s lived in modern times. It's fun to play with those ideas, create a story, and share them with others. My biggest concern is finances. I would want a stable career and a stable income, but if I have another career, I might have no time to write.
ReplyDeleteA dream of mine would be to become a famous writer that works and writes in NYC. I would love to write about events or issues going on in our world for the New York Times Post.
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely adore to be a professional writer. I think what I would like to do most would be comics, because I like art and writing, so it combines them both. Otherwise, I would want to write fantasy or sci-fi.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that I would really enjoy being a professional writer because I mostly like writing stuff that inst meant for a big audience.
ReplyDeleteI actually plan on being a professional writer in my future. I feel very passionate about writing poetry and it is a way relieving stress and it also is something I would like to consider as one of my talents. I also plan on being a musician or some sort of songwriter around that realm of writing.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be a professional writer because I genuinely love to write. When I write I feel like I can create my own escape and express all of my emotions that are usually pent up inside.
