Idea Share: Object Pass-Around

Share at least 3 of your ideas connected to the objects we passed around in a COMMENT on this post.  You could share what the object reminded you of in your own life or your story idea or both.  Skim over the ideas of your classmates and if you like one of theirs, jot it down in your journal to turn into something of your own.

Your comment should be rather lengthy--at least 3 complex, solid sentences.

Then choose at least 1 of your ideas to expand on in a full page in your journal.

If you have some time, browse the website Significant Objects for examples of writing connected to objects--you might even find an object there that triggers some writing for you.

Thanks for trying this today!

  4. The shell reminded me of when my grandparents moved from Springfield to St. Louis, and as a going away present I gave him a tiny shell that was similar to the one we looked at today. My grandpa still has the shell to this day.
The Paris plate made me think of how my mom and I are always talking about the places we'll go when we visit France and how posh the people always seem to be there.
The key made me think of when I moved to St. Louis several years ago and got my own key to my family's apartment, even though the skeleton key and the apartment key look nothing alike.

  5. The Shell: One year me and my family went to Florida and while I was in the water diving for cool stuff I got hit by a dead jelly fish tentacle. I still have the scare from it.
The Paris Tray: My grandma loves collecting things like that. She sees a beauty in them that some people don't.
The Key: That key reminded me of the Harry Potter movies. I'm not exactly sure why but it did.

  6. The shell reminded me of a picture that was in an old friend's house. For the short story, I made up a person who carried around the shell that belonged to an old friend of hers.

The fuzzy giraffe reminded me of when I was a kid feeding giraffes at the zoo and when I went to see the giraffes recently. In my story, I wrote about how someone found a little giraffe he hadn't seen since he was a kid.

The copper key reminded me of a painting that used to be hung up at my house. My story was about the painting in an art museum, but everyone was too distracted by other small things to really appreciate it.

  7. The first object that I acquired and made me think was the seashell. For most people, it reminds them of the beach in which I have never been to. The thing that this seashell did remind me of was peace and serenity. As it provides a sense of purity.
Another object that sparked my interest and resonated was the key. The key reminds me heavily of my favorite movie, Coraline! The movie is centered around a small door that is unlocked by a button key which then leads to another universe where Coraline discovers her "other mother".
The last object, the Paris ash tray, inspired a story. In which stated, "An ash tray, in which the age in recognized yet it holds a variety of memories. It kind of gave me an 1800's vibes as smoking was a regular concept then. Also, in the 1800's there were many barriers people had to face as they didn't have technology or electricity.

  9. - one : the shell made me think of a book i have read. i read roverandom by j.r.r. tolkein when i was younger, and because of this and the shell, i wanted to write about mermaids. perhaps a story about mermaids near a shoreline, and how they need help from a land witch, or something like that!
    - two : the paris tray really made me think of "noir" things... like detective mysteries... i thought of a lady detective in deep read lipstick, smoking a cigarette while reading news of a murder. it seemed to pique her interest..

    - three : my last object i want to talk about is the key. it made me think of a girl, living in a house surrounded by wood. on a day adventuring, as children like to do, she finds an old key... she tries it on every nook and cranny she can find, holes in the ground, cracks in the bark.. and then it works, on a very old willow tree... it opens and much treasure unknown to human eyes is discovered.. she walks in, makes a mess of the home and steals what she finds to be pretty. she is then confronted by a sprite of sorts who curses her, because she did not ask to take anything, and people should not meddle in things that aren't theirs to meddle with... the story goes on to tell the tale of the girl's curse and how she overcomes it...

  11. 1. The Giraffe reminded me of my little brothers toys he would leave in my bathtub and I would step on in the shower.
    2. The lock I made a story up stating it was used to chain down a vampire that was preying over a unassuming village.
    3. The shell reminded me of my trip to florida over the summer when i scavenged 100's of seashells with my sister.

  12. The giraffe reminded me of myself, because I enjoy comparing our necks. The material of it reminds me of the Calico Cats I always wanted as a kid.

For the key, I wrote a bit of a story for it. The key would belong to the lock of the user's greatest desire, only to be used one time.
I connected the broken, rusty lock to it as a symbol of human nature's greediness for money and power, instead of the users desiring things like peace, equality, and love.

  13. 1) the shell reminded me of my cousins, they took a trip to penecola Florida a couple years back, and I was caught between football camp, or going to fl. sooo back when I was in my prime I chose that 10/10.
    2) the lock reminded me of some things I saw on reddit, it was people making memes of locks, being on necklaces. I never understood but it was a weird connection.
    3) tray made me think of how i plan to travel a lot in the future, and i often find myself distracted thinking about the future when i should be in the now.
